Dr. Danielle Belardo is the Director of Cardiology, and Co-Director of Research and Education, at IOPBM in Newport Beach California. She is also a proud vegan, but that alone has not stopped vegan twitter from ridiculing her for various beliefs and practices she holds surrounding plant-based diets. I sat down with Dr. Belardo to discuss why she receives so much hate from vegans online, where she actually stands on being a vegan vs. what she recommends for her patients, and various ways you can improve the health of your heart. There are some really hot takes in here, particularly around being vegan and receiving vaccines that were tested on animals, cholesterol and saturated fats in eggs, and universal benefits of plant-based diets.

When she said that it's recommended to reduce fat she meant while on a high glucose diet right? Because the whole basis of keto is essentially fat a fat based diet and people who stick to it don't get clogged arteries... From what I understood the problem is not with fat but with the combination of fat and, sugar - which glycates the LDL molecules thus forming plaque. The thing that confuses me is that people who acknowledge that keto isn't dangerous, Dr Mike , and many other experts, always say that you should avoid fat, thus choosing carbs as the main energy source for everyone, yet I feel it should be each person's choice to make...

See she has proven facts and resources. She isn’t forcing or guilting anyone into being vegan. She’s so polite and understanding and doesn’t get mad when questions are asked. She teaches people instead of pushing it down their throats. That obnoxious rude bigoted Vegan Teacher could learn a thing or two from her.

I completely stopped drinking soda at age 17, I lasted for like 3-4 years strictly, after an appendix surgery I had, I was not suggested nor ordered to not drink it, I just wanted to stop drinking gaseoses, and when I finally drinked again, it was literally because there was nothing else I could drink and I was thirsty af, now I think I drink about 3 times a year, and it is definitely because there is no water available and/or I really feel like drinking, it is easier than you think once you get to it. Right now I'm trying to cut sugar entirely, this has been a hardest task, but I have made some advance!

I have a bit of problem with the randomized control data on this point. The issue is that some minerals take so long to get out of the body that the trail might very well be over before they are totally gone. In some cases its also very common that people have to much of some minerals, getting some for a period might be very healthy, but then getting unhealthy over a fairly long period of time, talking years. This specially applies to over weight people. I would suggest that some of the studies is based on incomplete methology. Also some of the problem with meat is not the meat it self, but if its combined with a high carbohydrate diet combined with meat that is the problem. In theory you could be vegan and only eat cake and cookies. There is also some health issue connected with some vegetable based protein, that might not show up with a study that not specially checks for it. This is the problem with reading scientific studies as gospel. They might not be as complete as one might think. That the study says that it didn´t find any adverse effect, really means that it didn´t find any adverse effect they controlled for. That is why you should never lean on just one study, but rather have a fairly large quantity of them. Specially in this case when the people making the study might be bias. That is something that is suppose to not happen, but in reality, its rather the case pretty much always

My big issue with going vegetarian or vegan is that low iron and iron retention problems run in my family. I don't absorb or retain iron from plant-based sources as well as I do from meat. I've tried adding plenty of iron-rich vegetables to my diet (eaten raw with citrus juice for better absorption), and half a serving of red meat does more for me than enough raw spinach to provide twice the iron (and raw spinach is a favorite snack). Supplements are iffy for me, because they tend to make me lightheaded and nauseous, regardless of when I take them or what I take them with. I even have trouble with vitamins, because they upset my stomach. I could cut most animal products out of my diet fairly easily and not notice much difference in my eating habits, but I'd develop anemia pretty quickly as a result.

Not that I don't support some ideas or reasons for people going vegan (for example), but there's no way some of our hunter-gatherer ancestors were more gatheres than hunters. To think that they would have been walking around long distances gathering some plants rather than going on an exciting hunting trip to get some energy-dense animal fats is ridiculous to me.

Dr. Danielle makes me feel better, I tried really hard to be vegan but I have really bad kidney stones and need a certain level of calcium. I used to get my calcium from plants like spinach, other dark leafy greens, nuts, legumes etc. I had no idea that those types of foods were causing my stones, a mixture of high oxalate foods plus no other sources of calcium sent me to the ER twice with oversized stones. I had a lot of vegans look down on me for switching to a vegetarian diet but I try to source my products from local farms and check out the animals living situation before I buy things like milk. And yes, I did ask my urologist about calcium supplements to which she told me they wouldn't work the same as natural calcium sources, so I really appreciated this collab.

Nice! A reasonable, well balanced, evidence based and nonjudgemental look at diet and health from a vegan! From an evolutionary development standpoint, bone marrow and meat would have been very helpful for increasing our rate of evolutionary development of our minds because crops weren't a thing back then and so plants were exclusively wild ones which have just enough nutrients to convince an animal to eat them and spread their seeds, but at this point we have reliable crop yeilds and robust supply lines so meat's no longer necessary for us to maintain our mental capacity.

People are a little narcissistic they get upset when their beliefs are challenged. I am not upset about it, I want my beliefs to be challenged so I can grow and live healthy. I started a vegan diet at the age of eleven and stuck to it until I was twenty two years old. I never went off my diet. I added chicken and fish after I got sick. I still have mostly a plant based diet. People are evil too a lot of people attacked me and claimed it's impossible that I stuck to my diet for so long because no one has. Its not true, there are lots of people who are living vegan lifestyles and have from the beginning of their lives. Also, I am autistic I never go off my plans. I stick to everything I plan. Those who make claims are uneducated and abusive. I no longer response to them. All we need is good soil with lots of nutrients in the soil, the plants will absorbed the nutrition and give us all the health benefits we need. All other animals eat the plants and do very well because it's healthy.

ok, that works for usa maybe, but let us be real) i wanna see original human being with average salary in not so influential and developed countries, not farming - being a vegan. hahaha. really?! it is extremely expensive in my country. and you need to search and to order supplements from other country. sooooo....it is not realistic. and i don't eat meat and i am vegan. and the best thing is to find something that is suitable for yourself. i also studying medicine, 3-d university year, my pathological anatomy professor was making a research while getting another degree and she told that one of the biggest problem in our country is the "fashion" of being vegan. people that harm their health not knowing how to balance everything in their diet and that don't want to change anything cause they think that the doctor will make them eat meat or supplement that are not natural, better to address the way it can be explained to patients in not harmful and respectful way.

it’s nice that they talk about meeting patients where they’re at, especially for someone like me who has way too many food allergies to ever go completely plant-based. i’m allergic to wheat (and gluten. separately.), peanuts, and most tree nuts so the vast majority of protein substitutes are not an option, and even foods in vegan restaurants are off limits because they tend to be the worst with cross contamination 😔 even the ones that market themselves as vegan And gluten free (seriously the only two allergic reactions i’ve had in the past five years have been at vegan restaurants, it’s ridiculous. and the other time i went to a vegan restaurant they literally gave me a plate of leaves with dressing because every single other thing on their menu was cross contaminated... even though they said all over the place that they were friendly to gluten free diets!!)

What I learned is that a lot of people (in Germany) that surround themselves with esotherics, anti-vax, and a certain branch of veganism, tend to stem from anthroposophy (based on Rudolf Steiner). Anthroposophy has strong tie-ins with homeopathy, but most importantly, Rudolf Steiner himself might have had some influenco on Nazi ideology. What we can see in Germany: a lot of eco-fascist, anti-vaxxers etc go protest with ACTUAL rightwingers and Nazis

I feel like the entire anti-vaxx issue could be solved if physicians and doctors put out ALL the information related to vaccines instead of shaming anti-vaxxers (I know this isn't always the case, but it happens more often than you'd think). Anti-Vaxxers have genuine concerns and there's nothing wrong with helping them alleviate these concerns through proper information.

when people talk about meat replacement they don't talk enough about the sodium. as someone with high blood pressure i rarely eat meat replacements products because you're lucky to find a product where ONE serving has less than 20 or 30% of your DAILY sodium. also, there's no enough talk about the bad things vegans eat. they will still eat a ton of oreos, or vegan donuts, or other stuff. sugar is vegan and the ones i know eat A LOT of it.

I have a bit of a take of my own... First of all, veganism as a personal health choice = great! I think that's probably the best reason to do it. Veganism as a protest against animal abuse by humans... I don't think this does as much good as the people who swear by it tell you it does. At the end of the day there's still a market for those animals and they're still being abused. Buying animal products that come from places like family-run farms who treat their animals ethically (and encouraging others to follow that example), probably makes a better change to the lives of animals than it would to just swear off all animal products. That all being said this viewpoint is still well-intentioned and doesn't do any harm. And that alternative is not always easy or even possible to do. But I also see the idea of vegetarian- or veganism as a way of respecting nature or getting closer to it, and I think this is misguided. Carnivory is a part of nature too, and making a major lifestyle change for a reason that implicitly dismisses that... well, I don't see it as a particularly healthy way to look at the natural world. If I was speaking to someone who was considering making that change for that reason, I'd probably ask them to consider making a choice that reflected their own nature, whatever they feel that is, instead of following this idea that to eat only plants is to be closer to the natural parts of the world. If that ends up being the same change anyway, then that's fine. I just feel that it's really important when making a choice like this to do it rationally, and do it for yourself. Don't do it because someone or even a number of someones told you it's the way things should be done.

I think what a lot of people forget, is that veganism is not just a diet but a lifestyle that includes a specific diet that so happens to have many health benefits. I can agree from a health standpoint that evidence shows that a little meat is fine, while I still disagree from an ethical perspective, because every dead animal is one too many. Vegans are often ridiculed as extremist and in a way we are - because in our diet we go beyond what is just healthy for us. Dr. Belardo is doing her job as a medical professional when she advices on diet. But in being a vegan this medical advice she gives doesn't aligne with the ethical principal of veganism. Thus, I can see why ethical vegans are against her. Because she breaks the ethical principal of veganism, as medical accurate is it is, and she brings veganism to this very discussion. The "problem" is, that she attaches that advice to a vegan lable.

Personally the only issue I have with veganism is that some vegans claim stuff like milking cows is “animal abuse”, but those cows have to be milked without their young. It also does not hurt the cow to be milked, but instead releases a pressure. Otherwise, y’all do whatever. I’m definitely against animal cruelty, and eat more plants than meat, but I do still eat meat and other animal products.

Yeah people should never go 100% vegan for just health reasons unless they have a medical condition preventing them from eating animal products. And vegan diet doesn’t necessarily mean 100% healthy. Eating more nutritious balanced diets is the key. And also, food should make people happy, not the other way around.

Do vegans really have moral issues with eating (unfertilized) eggs? It is dead biomass that will never live, therefore eating eggs is clearly morally superior to eating plants that are actually alive. Condition: The chickens that lay those eggs have living conditions that are overall equal or better to that of wild fowl. (Typical plusses: medical treatment, ample food supply, safety from predators... Minuses: boredom, captivity in small living spaces...)
