Do you remember growing up when you’d have to watch these really uncomfortable health films in school? Me too. I wanted to take a look back and see just how accurate those films were and whether they were teaching us anything remotely useful. Turns out… sometimes? Today I watch films about the menstrual cycle and puberty, soap and water from the US Military, and an actual introductory film to the life of a DO (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine) which is what I am! Needless to say, the antics of Stubby and Mr. Do Right won’t be soon forgotten.

I think Doctor Mike should do a reaction video to Terra Nova. There’s a good number of medical scenes from the sci-fi series and it’s set in the future.

Regarding the heating with a window open, Dr Mike was spot on if you are putting a chimney into a building there must be adequate ventilation, it is actually strange that when open fires were common this knowledge was common but once we moved to furnaces and boilers, everyday people forgot.

Y'all need to learn some health history, doc! Open windows were part of a health movement that posited people needed fresh air. (Scandinavian people went as far as putting well swaddled babies on the balcony for health even in deep winter well into this period. Furnaces were designed with this in mind so one could easily overheat with one turned up all the way. Also, carbon monoxide. Stubby might have been lighting the gas fire and not have known to light multiple pilot lights.

Also about calling a period a curse, well yeah pain, bloating, liquid pouring out of you, stink, crazy emotions, etc. be your most beautiful self could also mean, make yourself feel good because your body feels like crap. That’s why there’s period boxes with new underwear, chocolate, etc.

8:17 - 9:00 what about inflation? when I punched into google "$7000 in 1950 vs inflation" the result I got was "Value of $7,000 from 1950 to 2021 $7,000 in 1950 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $75,978.17 today, an increase of $68,978.17 over 71 years. The dollar had an average inflation rate of 3.42% per year between 1950 and today, producing a cumulative price increase of 985.40%" if that is true then YIKES! ;p

My personal experience: overtired kids do get sick sometimes. It's like they don't feel all that well, so they overcompensate with more bursts of energy while playing. By the next morning they get sick. Clenliness is still a problem with teenagers, mostly boys. My kid vomited all night long from a half a liter of cola and 3 candy bars. Taught him to not take it in too fast. 6-8 modern menstruation pads (bc tampons were never my thing) are still a thing, first two days and nights they even need to be doubled up. Overheating a living space does make you sleepy and sometimes sick. (So does AC-ing your car or living space). Many of these PSA's seem to point out that moderation should be the underlining thought of everything we do. Can't say I disagree.

So for anyone thinking "What about inflation???" when the film mentioned $7000 and Mike scoffed at how cheap that is, 7000 bucks in 1950 would be $76,000 today. So still relatively cheap compared to the prices he was mentioning.

When you were surprised how low the cost of the education was 5000$-7000$. You need to keep in mind that the dollar back then isn't the same dollar as now if we say that film was made in the 1960 The 7000$ would be nowadays about 62 000 dollars. still not nearly as much as you were describing todays cost of education but a lot anyways.

The period names I heard was "sailing the red sea" or "flying the red flag". The funniest, & our favorites were that "George came to visit", "George is visiting" "_Uncle_ George is due any day", "my Uncle is visiting" & lastly "my 'friend ' is visiting", with the similar things said, like the "George" variations.

I'm fairly certain I've referred to my period as a "curse".... it took 12 years for me to be diagnosed with severe endometriosis. I've had 26 surgical procedures in the last 9 years all for endo. Including a bowel resection, emergency ileostomy, oophorectomy, salpingetctomy, and hysterectomy... all before I was 33. I was also unable to have children. So yeah.... My period was definitely a curse.

Keep a window open in the heated room because there were individual gas heaters in rooms. Burns up the oxygen pretty fast. It was a good thing most of our houses were pretty leaky on their own. No where near as sealed shut as most modern houses. That said, I have a CO detector in my rv, even though it's leaky, because it's propane heat.

So about the menstruation video at the beginning. Yes it was sexist..... but at the same time telling a woman to be her most attractive self and change her napkins and underwear often was a way of training young women to care for themselves and prevent the embarrassment that comes with the smell, depression, mess and pain that comes with menstruation. But in a backward way. Today we just say it outright. Back then they tried to be as proper as possible.

I would like to mention one thing, according to the inflation and the general loss of purchasing power of dollar, the 7000 dollars in the 50's was equivalent of approximately 75 - 80 thousand in todays dollars. I know that it is not as much as 250 thousand dollars but still, it is much closer that just 7000 dollars, as it was stated in movie.

Materia Medica is the study of constituents in plants and plant material that generate a bodily response. Before modern pharmacy, plants were used! Phytotherapy is an old practice and being supported by modern research. The UK was pushing for phytotherapy to be a recognized medical profession a few years back but the conclusion was to not do that because of plant sustainability and the current demand on wild harvest plants leading to adulterated product. The push back came from the phytotherapy community itself as our concern for coverage by national health care systems was less compared to the concern we have for sustainable practices. I recommend pulling an old medical textbook to view some of these practices before modern pharmaceuticals. Further, search for compounding pharmacies or dispensaries near you. Phytotherapy and TCM dispensaries are more common place than you think! I'm currently studying Phytotherapy in the most comprehensive program that North America has. It's 3 years long and covers western biomedical foundations, TCM foundations, 5 levels of Materia Medica, and more. In addition, we have multiple hours of clinical practice which start from observation and end in independent practice. We firmly believe we are here to support and encourage healing on a long term basis but appreciate the intervention biomedicine can offer in emergent situations. Health care is a dynamic approach and each practitioner has a role in overall wellness.

Halfway through the year he turned his clothes inside out. They were apparently never washed. They were very different times. Our dollar now is around 9 percent of what the dollar amount was back then. So it was a lot more then you realize. At the same time I doubt they included the extra costs of sleeping ans travel. I know it's still probly more now, but at the same time anyone could take out a loan to go to school. They couldn't back then. Not as easy as it is now.
