Do you remember growing up when you’d have to watch these really uncomfortable health films in school? Me too. I wanted to take a look back and see just how accurate those films were and whether they were teaching us anything remotely useful. Turns out… sometimes? Today I watch films about the menstrual cycle and puberty, soap and water from the US Military, and an actual introductory film to the life of a DO (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine) which is what I am! Needless to say, the antics of Stubby and Mr. Do Right won’t be soon forgotten.

So the whole "dress up during your period" discussion came up with my mom when I was younger. Mind you I'm a guy but I grew up with a mom and 2 sisters. Not only was I buying products for them from a young age, I was having to often ride my bike a couple miles to the store to do it. It was never an issue for me since it was normal from a young age. All that growing up with girls helped me alot when recently my daughter reached the point in her life and I had a talk with her about coming to me when she needed anything. She had a good laugh at the story of dad riding his bike to buy this stuff for her aunts. ANYWAYS, the whole dress up part. The way my mom explained it was that it was more of a mental health type deal, not a sexist thing. She said it's not uncommon to feel unclean and so on and by putting on a nice outfit you feel better and more motivated to be in a good mood and feel good about yourself. She would take my sisters out to get their nails or hair done when she could afford it and so on. Maybe for some it was a sexist thing but maybe it wasn't for all. I won't pretend to have all the answers, just that my mom, a life long nurse btw, had a "screw what people think of you, what you think of you is what matters" attitude.

Look your prettiest sounds a bit odd, but my aunts all told me they grew being told washing while on your period was bad and would make them sick. They grew up in the late 50s and 60s. Granted, not in the US, but roughly at about the same timeframe of these videos.

Wow, that menstruation video is actually incredibly good information for something coming out of the fifties. They speak frankly and mostly accurately. You'd have a hard time finding that good of info in a modern sex ed class, especially in certain parts of the country. Well, until they tell girls to dress up for their periods. Fifties gonna fifties.

When the they told how much the price of college was for doctors back in the day was 7000, we must realize that our money value has gone down due to inflation. 7000 in the 40s equates to around 130k today. So while it isn't as much as 250k it shows how times have changed the cost of education and living.

I think you forgot to adjust for inflation on the osteopathic medicine infomercial. With some quick searching and calculating, that $6,000 cost is more like $50,000 - $150,000 today (HIGHLY depending on date). Granted, it's still a lot cheaper than the half a million you're talking about, but it does significantly close the gap.

The ironic thing about the inflation of school tuition. Over 80 percent goes to administrative costs. Not getting new teachers, not getting books, not increasing departments, just pencil pushers for regulatory bodies. Teacher union demands more job protection. Government says okay but you need to prove you're following x y z standard. Tuition goes up to hire staffers to document standard. Teachers in unions teach students it's capitalisms fault, not realizing it was their own union. Student protest for 100% tax paid schools not realizing the countries with those systems have stricter admission standards, (like retest limits on SAT/ACT) and if you don't qualify the college costs double than the states.

A very dark chapter in the history of infant care is the denial of pain sensation in newborns and young babies. Babies were operated on without anesthesia until the 1980s because it was believed that they could not feel any pain. This topic has been largely hushed up to this day. There has never been a public discussion about it, and to the best of my knowledge, no consideration has ever been given to compensating the victims

i think it was religion that was the origin of Menstruation being referred to as The Curse, as at the time America was primarily, if not almost entirely Christian, and in Christian beliefs specifically with the story of Adam and Eve, The Curse was put upon Eve and all women after her, because Eve was not only the first to give into temptation, but she also coerced Adam to give into temptation, so it was an eternal punishment from God. which whether the story is true or not, i wouldnt say that it's wholly inappropriate, after all women go through a lot of discomfort when Menstruating and they go through that almost all of their life, if i were a woman, i'd label it a curse.

One cringey...if not creepy thing I remember reading about was how people who had tuberculosis were treated back before anti-biotics became the go to treatment for the illness. The treatments involved everything from removing sections of the patient's ribcages, to even a kind of electro-shock treatment. However, it gets worse. Due to the low survival rate for the illness, there was even a standard procedure in place as how to handle the corpses. First and foremost, autopsies were rare, if not outright banned in some areas. Furthermore, burial wasn't allowed. The bodies of the deceased were cremated. The reason was simple, if dark. Since doctors weren't sure how contagious the disease was, and if a deceased person could still transmit it, it was argued that the only safe way to handle the body, was to burn it. For that reason, nearly every tuberculosis hospital had their own crematoriums on site. Those that didn't, still contracted with a local funeral home for disposal of remains.

"Be your most attractive self" although initially sounds sexist, I wonder if they really meant "try to take even more care than usual so that you continue to feel confident about yourself and not let your period be a reason to hold you back and make you depressed" It's easy to be like "eff the world, I hate myself" during my period, but maybe there's some personal psychological benefit to putting a little extra care into one's appearance? Idk, just a thought!! 🤷🏼
